How to Choose Binoculars

For a person that uses binoculars often, they know that there are different types and uses.  But for the person who’s just going out to an event for the first time, they might not have any idea how different binoculars are, what the numbers mean, or how to make the right choice for the event.  For this help is needed, to make the right choice so that they won’t show up at a bird watching event with hunters binoculars or vice versa.  That could be embarrassing.

There are a variety of types of binoculars in the world, but each type has the same purpose of seeing farther than the eye can see naturally.  Outside of eyeglass, they are the most used optical tool used in the world.  Overall there are five types of binoculars for five different uses.  

We at Sanguino believe that to first know the difference between the types of binoculars, a person has to know what the numbers mean on the binoculars.  Every pair is identified by two numbers.  The first number tells the person the magnification power and the second is the length of the lenses.  Meaning that if the lenses is 7×35.  The magnification power is 7 times closer than a person could see naturally.  Then the diameter of the lenses measure 35mm.  The larger the diameter of the lenses the more light that comes in.  The more light that comes into the lenses the better view a person will have of the object that they are looking at.

The first type is just a general use binocular.  Most will use theses as outdoor activities, like a sporting event to see the field/court better.  The binoculars that are common for this general purpose has a magnification of 7x to 10x.  Another type is hunting binoculars.  The choice of what magnification is decided by the type of game the person is hunting.  Most normal hunters can use a magnification of 7x to 10x for general hunting, 12x to 16x magnification for long range shooting for varmints.

When a pair of binoculars are being used for bird watching, the standard is to use 8×42.  The magnification will help see the details on the birds and the larger diameter will allow more light so the picture clearer. Though some will use up to 12x magnification and up to 50mm lenses.     

Knowing what event a person will use the binoculars at will decide how what they will purchase or use for the event.  Mostly when choosing what binoculars to use, a person really needs to think how far away from the event they will be sitting at, and what kind of view they want.

Where to buy binoculars and telescopes

Every now and again a person need to make a purchase of binoculars or telescopes.  But when the need arrives, the need to know where to go to find what they need for a prices that they can afford.  For the person who wants to find binoculars in the United States, Europe, Asia and Australia.  Here are Sanguino’s recommended places that they can pick up a pair of binoculars or a telescope.

For the potential buyers in the USA, they can pick up a pair of binoculars at their local Walmart, Best Buy, or sporting goods stores like Dicks or Bass Pro Shop.  The potential buyers can also find them online at places like Amazon or B&H.  For the person wanting to buy telescopes, they can go to Best Buy, Walmart Online and specialty stores that specialize in all things space. A person can go to the nearest city and find a store that will sell a telescope.  And if they don’t want to travel to a city, then they can purchase one online very simply.  

Those who live in Europe will have to find their binoculars Bushnell, Euro Optic, and Optics Pro.  They can always search and shop online at places like Amazon Europe, and Europe Nikon.  They can find the binoculars that they want at other stores also. Europeans can find their telescopes at shops like AstroShop, an online stores that has hundreds of telescope options and accessories.  Another place that a potential buyer can go to find a telescope is APM Telescopes, where they carry various types of telescopes at average prices.  

In Asia a potential buyer can find binoculars at Bushnell or on online shops like Sony-Asia, Nikon Singapore and Amazon.  At Bushnell a person can find hunting binoculars, and wildlife binoculars. They offer the latest and greatest models for all types. The potential purchaser of a telescope in Asia will have to go to places like Orion Telescopes and Binoculars. This is an online store and locations in Australia, Austria, Belgium, France and many other locations around the world.

In Australia binoculars and telescopes are harder to come by. A few major camera shops stock a limited supply of binoculars from the more known brands (Nikon, Olympus, Bushnell etc.). But the best place to find them would be online. Procular is the largest optical supplier in Australia. They have a huge selection of binoculars, monoculars, spotting scopes, telescopes and more. They also offer microscopes, night vision gear and other optical devices.

These are just some places that a person can find the telescope or binocular.  This list is no way conclusive or exclusive.  These places are just a few of the places where a person can make a telescope or binocular purchase.  When it comes to purchasing a telescope or binoculars, shopping around is for the best, but finding what the person wants and likes is the overall goal.

Bird Watching and other activities that take place in the great outdoors and nature are reasons for a person to own a spotting scope.  They use it for watching for the birds, wildlife that they are seeking to find.  They want to be able to see the nature in its element without disturbing it, but a pair of binoculars are too small, and a telescope is too big, a watcher will need something that fits right.

Here at Sanguino the spotting scope is commonly known just as a scope.  It’s just a more advanced way of looking around and for something. Because it use most commonly in bird watching, due to the fact that a scope can give a more precise view of a bird hundreds of feet away.

The scope is recommended for a magnification of 20x to 60x, which makes the scope recommended for anything farther away that wants to be seen.  Anything farther than what a pair of binoculars can see.  This is the main difference in the two products.

The spotting scope is different from binoculars because the scope only offers service to one eye, where the binocular has both eyes involved.  Only using one eyes however will take away the uneven images that occur when a person uses two eyepieces.  

Some might ask why a person would use a scope when they could use a telescope.  Well that is because the scope is different from an astronomical telescope because a scope has additional lenses that make the image appear upright to the eye.  

In astronomy the image does not have to be up and down correctly, where if a person is looking through a scope at a bird that is flying upside down into the sky the user might believe they have found something rare.
The size is another difference between the two, scopes are normally smaller and lighter than a telescope.

Having a smaller scope does impair the distance a person can see, it makes the scope more convenient to use.
A scope is also different because the magnification change between viewing skies verses viewing the stars.  A normal spotting scope can have a magnification of up to 60x, but a telescope needs to have double that, a magnification of 120x.  

Spotting scopes are something that nature enthusiasts need to have a viewing of birds, animals and other things in the great outdoors of the world.  The want to see things that binoculars won’t pick up but that a telescope would be too big for.  Having the spotting scope is the Goldilocks of viewing aids, it will fit just right.

What is a monocular and how to choose one?

Everyone knows what a telescope and binoculars are, what they how, and even how they work. But, most people have no idea what a monocular is.  What it does or not it works.  It’s not as popular as its friends but still very important for in individuals.  The monocular much easier to transfer from one location to another.

So, what is a monocular?  A monocular is a modified refracting telescope.  It refracts the light so that will magnify objects via lenses and prisms.  Because the monocular uses a prism it makes it very light weighted. This is the primary difference between that and a telescope.  The monocular is sometimes referred to as one.  The monocular is different from a telescope because it produces a two-dimensional image. The monocular that has a straight optical path, can be very long.  The prisms will be used to fold the path, and make the instrument become shorter.  

The monocular is sometimes used for the visually impaired people.  They will use the monocular to see objects at distances that a person with normal vision would not have difficulty to see.  Examples of this is something written on a whiteboard or something being projected onto a screen.  

When deciding on getting a monocular, a person needs to consider the following: magnification, size of the monocular, and eye relief.  The average magnification of a monocular scope is 5x or 6x.  The thing to think about when deciding it the higher the magnification the less stable a view will be it when holding the monocular, due to the hand moving.  At these times of higher magnification, a person might want to mount the monocular onto a tripod.  

Eye relief is the space between the actual eye and the eyepiece of the device. It is measured in millimeters and is important because it determines how far away the scope can be but still allow the person to see through the scoop. Considering the eye relief is important because if a person wears glasses then they need an eye relief of 14mm.  

Choosing the right monocular is important so a person can have the visual enhancement that they want.  It’s all just a matter of knowing what the person wants before the walk into a place to purchase it.  It’s just a matter of knowledge and desire of what a person wants, and anyone can have and use a monocular.

How does a telescope work?

Today’s day and age is a time of quick technology that is super-fast, effective and high tech.  Honestly if it isn’t say an app, then most of society tends to overlook the value of a device.  Nothing seems to be more important than that of the computer.  In schools, most students only know that telescopes are used to look into to space because they learn about space.  Most student have no idea what a telescope does or even how it works.  

Telescopes are one of the coolest inventions of all times.  The telescope has been around since 1608, when Hans Lippershey created it. Many others have taken credit for the design, Johannes Kepler described how the telescope could work to see objects far away.

They telescope is important because they allow a person to see very far away. The science is of the telescope it uses refracting light and mirrors to be able to see the distance the eye can only dream of.  There are two types of telescopes a reflective lenses and a refractor telescope.  

Here is how the refractor telescope works on the inside, the light reaches the primary lenses.  This lens is rounded, convex, meaning that the light bends and goes to the secondary lens.  The secondary lens is the focusing lens.  The focusing lens takes care for focusing the light and producing a clear image of the object the person has focused on.  

With a reflective telescope the light travels in a similar manner but instead of bending with curved mirrors, the light reflects back.  With both types of telescopes the more light that is let into the telescope the farther away a person can see.

The way a telescope is made, is inside a cylinder, and is an opening on either end of the cylinder.  The one end is where a person can look through the eyepiece, and this piece will brighten the image, focus and magnify the image for the human eye.  At the other end, the opening is larger with an objective lens.  This lens gathers the light and bend it into focus for the user.  The light either bends or reflects depending on the types of lens in the middle of the cylinder.  

The telescope works in a simple and amazingly complex manner, student and the world need to remember how amazing this technology is.  Putting the apps, and tablets and other technology down to remember and appreciate the awesome technology that is a telescope and understanding how it works.
